Making IT Compliance essential through Software and Certification

In the effort to drive IT compliance, Prestariang has invested in R&D over the years and developed home-grown certifications, namely IC CITIZEN for the global market which is designed to produce digitally literate and responsible citizens.

This unique yet universal certification programme aims to impart Acceptable Usage Policy (AU P) that lays down rules of acceptable 'netiquette' or behaviour that should be applied when operating digital devices and using the internet. It is the world's first certification that promotes appropriate use of technology.

In addition, we also encourage compliance by providing Microsoft software under the Microsoft Licensing Agreement (MLA 2.0) to all Government Agencies in Malaysia and also to our customers in the private sector. To date, Prestariang has distributed and managed over 5.5 million software licenses.

Environmental Awareness Training & Certification

To support the sustainability initiative towards the environment, Prestariang has developed SMARTGREEN Fundamentals training and certification program that introduces emerging Green IT principles. SMARTGREEN increases awareness of the need for energy conservation to address the environmental impact of businesses and ICT operations. Candidates will be equipped with the necessary knowledge to assess, redesign and remodel their systems and practices. The key objective is to preserve the environment and natural resources, and minimise negative effects of human activities.

A Culture of Environmental Conservation

Progressing into Green ICT

Prestariang subscribes to the concept of 'Green ICT' and its twin objectives of leveraging on ICT to conserve natural resources (Green by IT) and reducing the impact of ICT on the environment (Green of IT). As we reinvent ourselves to leverage on our niche offerings in Technology & Talent for the ICT industry, we are aware of the need to create tangible solutions to decrease our footprint by utilising technology to adopt environmentally sound practices.

We believe that through our responsible actions, we can help mitigate climate change through sustainable management.

On a broad concept of sustainability innovation we encourage the following practices within the organisation and among our stakeholders:

  • Promote the use of energy efficient chips and disk drives mainly to our personnel and customer base.
  • Replacing personal computers with cloud computing in combination with mobile devices such as tablets and smart phones.
  • Reducing the energy consumption of data centres by relocating data onto various cloud-services.
  • Using renewable energy sources to power data centres.
  • Incorporation of eco-friendly furniture and building materials made of recycled products.
  • Energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems to achieve optimal efficiency.
  • Making use of natural light, automated energy-efficient cooling system and other office equipment.

As Prestariang employees, we advocate several changes to the ways we use computers and manage our workplace environment to significantly decrease energy consumption. These include:

  • Enabling power management features: Programming computers to automatically power down to energy saving state when not in use (sleep mode).
  • Smart technology and mobile apps for controlling lighting and cooling systems in the office premise are on trial for eventual implementation. Turning off computers, lighting and cooling systems when not in use.
  • Promoting and encouraging employee buy-in for green computing efforts.
  • Promoting telecommuting and remote computer administration to reduce transportation emissions.
  • Recycling bins are placed in the compound of our office premise as an alternative to conventional waste disposal. Employees and cleaners are encouraged to sort materials before disposing to help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Conduct environmentally conscious and paperless meetings.

This culture embodies the company's commitment to address the issue of energy use and has been effective in reducing the use of energy.

Prestariang now begins to apply gradual requirements to current and new vendors to address environmental friendly and energy efficient to Prestariang. By embracing Green IT practices, the transparency and accuracy of information collated will significantly improve in order to reduce our environmental impact.

Our Sustainable Commitment

Objective: To address the issue of energy and water use, and to effectively reduce our carbon footprint to achieve our aim of creating a lifelong learning environment

Energy Use

Our consumption of power has been growing over the past three years as a result of business growth and the nature of our business and the increase of employee of 5%. ICT operations consumed more power than other activities, particularly in data management and server operations. With this in mind, we are applying the new sustainable practices with a hope of better energy efficiency for the year 2017.

The total energy use covers ten (10) units of building from 70-73 Neocyber in Cyberjaya, with an average of 1804 sq.ft. per building. Further details of the building properties can be found in the latest Annual Report.

Water Use

Total Water Use

We have made significant headway in our efforts to reduce water consumption. The amount of water consumed was even lower than 2014 (575 m3) despite the increase in the number of employees and extension of work spaces. We will continue to encourage the efficient use of water among our personnel while also discourage wasteful practices.

Rainwater harvesting is another cost savings initiative which was introduced at our office premise. Collected water is used for non-potable purposes such as washing the corridors, grounds maintenance, irrigation drains and watering plants.

Carbon Footprint @ Work

Prestariang also have instilled several measures to further reduce our carbon footprint. A prime motivator to reduce carbon emissions is to save costs through energy-saving steps, reduce use of consumable products, rationalising office automation, like paper supply, and champion the "Reduce, Reuse & Recycle" in our organisation.

Since 2014, our Annual Reports are mainly distributed in CD-ROM format with only nominal copies being printed.

Employees are encouraged to use digital touchscreen devices and tools during meetings. Sharing of information, emails, reports and other correspondences are shared electronically which can be reviewed on a laptop, tablet or smartphone. We also advocate the use of smartphone apps that capture the content of paper files and turn them into digital files, and secured e-signing tools. Video or voice conferencing are encouraged for meetings as this contributes towards reducing travel costs and time savings.

In part that printing is inevitable, Prestariang uses papers that are endorsed for its environmental policies and commitment to zero deforestation.

We aim to adopt standards such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) to address key areas of sustainable development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality. We endeavour to continuously improve on our processes and adopt more effective ways to minimise our carbon footprint and help improve our quality of life.

Carbon Emission

Scope 2: Energy Indirect GHG per employee

Based on the guidelines of GHG Protocol, Prestariang produces immaterial amount of CO2 emission for Scope 1, as our product and services are mostly training related and software distribution which widely available via online. Hence, the usage of computers, projectors and training and software related services are already quantified in our electricity / energy use.

However, Scope 2 of Energy Indirect GHG relates to Prestariang and we widely use electricity as our means of delivering product and services. Based on Year 2014, Prestariang had 14% decrease of CO2 emission per employee compared to 2015. However 2016 made slight 5% increase of CO2 emission per employee in relation to rise to 5% of headcount. This shows that Prestariang activities has already made an impact. Prestariang will continue to reduce carbon emission to an acceptable level based on the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards 2016 (GRI 305).

Managing Risk and Opportunities

Recognising the Climate Change to the Company and Business

We recognise that due to Sustainability Policy implementation and other factor of change such as climate change, shift in demand, rapid technological advances and new upcoming disruptive technologies poses risks as well as opportunities to the Company, the business, to the investors, and stakeholders.

Through stakeholder engagement, we continue address and disclose our risk management where the Committee is expected to provide assurance that the risk management and internal control systems are operating adequately and effectively based on the risk management framework adopted.

Convergence in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) landscape

This has resulted in societal changes leading to a need to revamp traditional markets and business approaches. The global internet platform has reshaped the industry and market with rapid technological advances and new upcoming disruptive technologies.

Product Risks

Prestariang provides software license distribution and management synergistically with ICT Training & Certification business activity. The demand for the products and services has shifted from the traditional to more dynamic way of doing business.

Electricity Risks

Increases in electricity tariffs, the increase of business services are some of the identified risk to the environment. The Sustainability Working Committee monitors this closely to provide necessary preventive measure before emission increases per employee.

Physical Location Expansion

Increase of employee requires increase on space, where expansion of location, commuting from one branch to another will pose environment concern of higher GHG emission. The Sustainability Working Committee monitors this closely to provide necessary preventive measure before emission increases per employee.

Transformational Business

Due to the rapid technological advances, disruptive technologies and the emphasis on sustainability, we are also shifting and expanding opportunities. We no longer brand ourselves as a training and certification in ICT and distributor of software licences. We now shift the adoption to Technology & Talent which enables growth, innovation, creativity, operational effectiveness and adopt sustainability method in the markets in which we operate.

Dynamic Businesses Model

In gaining a competitive advantage and enhancing the value of our products and services that aligned with the Group's transformation strategies, we have extended several value added services to this core segment of our business. We now offer consultancy services, hardware, project management and asset management for our customers in the Federal Government, State Governments, other government agencies and the private sector.

Innovative learning

To capitalised on emerging technologies critical to the development of the digital economy which are transforming teaching and learning method. The major role of these technologies in education is to empower tech-enabled individuals to present educational activities. ICTs allow open source learning rather than manual source learning, thus encouraging students to be innovative, creative and proactive.

We are also revamping and remodelling the delivery of training through mobile apps and cloud-based applications. This is shared and saves energy – which eventually lessen GHG emission.

Responsible Investments in Sustainability and Green

The Board is vested to pursue a more responsible investment that relates to sustainability. This also includes investment that incorporates the ESG factors into decision makings. The expanding pool of socially responsible investors are on the rise and we must engage the stakeholder wisely to that green and sustainability will to continue to the forefront in decision makings.
